Algunos se deben haber dado cuenta, para los que usan DNS interno o primario, que en la ultima actualización del Redhat/CentOS 5.2 por medio del Yum, el paquete actualizado
caching-nameserver-9.3.4-6.0.2.P1.el5_2
en su actualización renombra el
named.caching-nameserver.conf
por
named.caching-nameserver.conf.rpmsave
e instala el default named.caching-nameserver.conf
Lo que sucede con esto es que tus configuraciones en donde dejabas hacer resolución a tu red LAN, o dar servicios a terceros de DNS se modificaron y solo empezaron a escuchar el loopback (127.0.0.1).
Grave problema el ocurrido, ya que muchos de los servidores de clientes a los cuales les doy servicio dejaron de resolver o dejaron de navegar.

Generalmente los archivos de configuración que vienen con las aplicaciones no deberían ser tocados o “modificados” con tus configuraciones locales.
Las distribuciones han tomado la politica de tener un archivo .local tipo named.caching-nameserver.conf.local o named.conf.local donde AHI colocas tus configuraciones particulares.
De esa forma te aseguras que las futuras actualizaciones nunca van a tocar tus propias configuraciones y siempre todo va a quedar marchando.
Como los burros de RedHat saben que hay algunos administradores que igual meten mano en los archivos default, te dejane se .rpmsave para que puedas hacer tu diff y parchar patras.
No soy administrador RedHat como para decirte “la justa”, pero me animo a pensar que lo de “burrada” ha sido una aventura idiomática tuya para el titulo de este post.

TE comento que tengo años usando Redhat (desde la version 5 me parece) y de ahi he seguido con CentOS, inclusive pagaba el servicio anual por descargas preferentes en mis servidores, y que me acuerde, nunca me ha chancado un archivo de configuracion.
